What was my son thinking when he wasn’t thinking?

I am ironing clothes for a trip Kyle and I are taking to Chicago. I have two more sweaters to finish then I can shove all these neatly folded stacks into suitcases. Kyle promises to help me when he is finished. I am not sure what he is finishing — and that is where this story takes a turn.

“Oh man,” Kyle shrinks into the sofa. “It didn’t work.”

“Huh?” I ask for my Pepsi bottle. “What didn’t work?”

“I saw it on TV. You put a Mentos in a soda bottle and it fizzes into the air. So I put a Spree in your Pepsi when you weren’t looking. I was going to surprise you.”

“Surprise me? With soda spraying into our ceiling fan? Why would you even think about doing something like that?”

“Don’t worry! It didn’t work. I put the cap back on.”

“Well, hand it to me. I need a drink.”

I twist the plastic cap a nano-millimeter when POOF! I turn into George Jetson. I motor through the air spraying brown syrup over all my piles. Kyle’s eyes pop open wide. He scrambles for something to say. “At least it didn’t get on anything.”

Didn’t get on anything? Is this just a man-thing or what? “Look at me! If I walked outside bees would eat me!” I wave my freshly ironed sweater covered in cola in my young son’s face. “See this sweater?” I wave it again. “This sweater cost a hundred dollars!”

“You spent a hundred dollars on that?” That ugly crocheted thing? You could see the words, macramé plant holder stamped across his face… We both cracked up. “Just wait… bwah-hah-hah…until… hee-hee-hee… your dad gets home!”
